I am a big kid when it comes to toys (pause). So, last yesterday (June 18), I had the pleasure of checking out Hasbro Toys’ holiday preview. As an ’80s toy nerd collector, I was curious to see how they would revision classic brands like G.I. Joe and Transformers. Not to mention, Nerf and some other freaky ish.
First up is my personal favorite… G.I. Joe.
G.I. JOE MOVIE 3-3/4-INCH MOVIE FIGURES (Approximate retail price: $7.99: Ages: 4 & up; Available: Summer 2009) – The first-ever live-action G.I. JOE movie hits theaters in August, but the movie-inspired action figures, including Sienna Miller as Baroness, Channing Tatum as Duke and Marlon Wayans as Ripcord, will be available beginning in July.
G.I. JOE MOVIE PIT PLAY SET (Approximate retail price: $99.99; Ages: 4 & up; Available: Summer 2009) – Prepare for battle in the first-ever play set that recreates the fortress headquarters for G.I. Joe (Castle Greyskull, anyone?). The state-of-the-art expandable multi-level play set is equipped with sounds, an elevator and much more. It even includes an exclusive 3-¾-inch General Hawk figure (not obtainable anywhere else).
G.I. JOE MOVIE NIGHT RAVEN VEHICLE (seen at top – approximate retail price: $39.99; Ages: 4 & up; Available: Summer 2009) – Based on the iconic jet from the 1980s and playing a big role in the upcoming movie, the Cobra Night Raven comes fully loaded, with an array of engines, weapons, lights and sounds. The largest vehicle in the entire new G.I. Joe vehicle series (no Snowcat?), this jet also features a pump action “Lock and Load” system that readies the missiles for attack and a 3-¾-inch Air-Viper figure.
G.I. JOE MOVIE ACCELERATOR SUIT DUKE (Approximate retail price: $69.99; Ages: 5 & up; Available: Summer 2009) – The Accelerator Suit Duke figure comes equipped with the armored accelerator suit that Duke wears in the movie. When activated using an easy hand grip control, Duke simulates his accelerator running motion, with motorized head, torso and arm movements as well as lights and speech with more than 50 phrases. I am not a fan… just saying.
Moving on… to Transformers.
TRANSFORMERS MOVIE FIGURES (Approximate retail price: starting from $12.99; Ages: 5 & up; Available: Summer 2009) – To support Transformers: ROTF, Hasbro is releasing movie action figures featuring the new film’s most popular characters will be available in three scales: deluxe, voyager (larger scale), and leader (largest scale and includes lights and sounds). Deluxe includes 24 characters, voyager will offer 11 characters, and leader will feature three, including Optimus Prime and Jetfire.
BUMBLEBEE MOVIE VOICE MIXER HELMET (Approximate retail price: $39.99; Ages 5 & up; Available: May 30, 2009) – The helmet allows kids to mix their voice through a “radio” — just like Bunblebee — and also features realistic robot battle sounds and radio tune-in phrases to add authenticity to the play experience… just like the Optimus Prime Voice Changer. I prefer the Prime helmet.
TRANSFORMERS MOVIE CONSTRUCTICON DEVASTATOR (Approximate retail price: $99.99; Ages 5 & up; Available: August 2009) – The biggest new star of ROTF has to be Devastator, the monstrous Decepticon made up of the Constructicons. BTW, is it me or were the Decepticon characters ALWAYS better than the Autobots?
Moving on… Star Wars
STAR WARS CLONE TURBO TANK (Approximate Retail Price: $99.99; Ages: 4 & up; Available: Fall 2009) – Truth be told most kids today know more about Star Wars because of Cartoon Network’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars than the original films. So, it only makes sense that Hasbro craft toys for that demo. The Clone Turbo Tank is an enormous field vehicle from the animated series, designed to transport up to twenty clone troopers (sold separately) into battle. The TURBO TANK features electronic sounds, running lights, phrases from the animation, a hidden, launchable speeder bike and a removable command center.
STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS DELUXE VEHICLE & FIGURE (Approximate Retail Price: $15.99; Ages 4 & up; Available: Fall 2009) – Later this year, eight deluxe vehicle & figure packs based on The Clone Wars will drop. Each pack features one vehicle and an accompanying action figure, both designed in the iconic 3-3/4-inch scale.
Moving on… Marvel
MARVEL UNIVERSE 3-3/4-INCH ACTION FIGURES (Approximate Retail Price: $7.99; Ages 4 & up; Available: Fall 2009) – Hasbro’s mastery of 3-3/4-inch action figures has expanded into the Marvel Comics universe! MARVEL UNIVERSE 3-3/4-inch action figures are instant collectibles. From Spider-Man and X-Force Wolverine to Daredevil and UIron-Man (seen above), fans will be treated to 34 single-pack figures throughout 2009. *Rashaun wonders to himself if that will include Storm, Black Panther or Bishop*
Moving on… Nerf
NERF N-STRIKE RAIDER RAPID FIRE CS 35 blaster (Ages 6 years & up/Approx. Retail Price: $34.99/Available: Fall 09) – Now, I have written about Nerf in the past as like “hey, that’s cute” but I really do want this blaster. It’s Nerf AND it’s gangster. It features a collapsible stock and new drum magazine that holds 35 darts and is interchangable with the NERF N-STRIKE RECON CS-6 blaster and NERF N-STRIKE LONGSHOT CS-6 blaster. By holding the trigger and pumping, players can instantly transition between “single” fire and “slam” fire mode, unleashing a rapid stream of 35 darts. Complete with a removable shoulder stock and Tactical Rail System allowing players to customize their blaster for each mission, the NERF N-STRIKE RAIDER RAPID FIRE CS 35 blaster also features a cool “digital camo” pattern unlike any Nerf blaster before it.
And finally… One of the freakiest toys I have ever seen (no disrespect):
FURREAL FRIENDS LULU, MY CUDDLIN’ KITTY (Ages 4 years & up/Approx. Retail Price: $54.99/Available: Fall 09) – There.Are.No.Words.
